In reports from Variety.com, E! Online, and others, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and CBS announced Sunday afternoon that the Emmy Awards were officially canceled in the wake of U.S. military attacks on Afghanistan.

The decision was made by academy officials and broadcast partner CBS at around 12:30 p.m. Pacific time. That was just hours before the ceremonies were set to begin at 5 p.m. Pacific time at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and at NBC Studios in New York.

According to Variety.com, shortly after word of the U.S. military action filtered out, ATAS and CBS officials indicated that the show would go on. But insiders at several studios and networks soon began hearing from various celebrities and executives that they no longer planned to attend the show.

For the second time in a month, the Emmy Awards had been called off. The Emmys were initially supposed to be handed out September 16, but organizers postponed the ceremony in the wake of the terror attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., five days earlier.
